What is a congenital heart defect?
A "CHD" is a structural malformation of the heart that is present at birth. There are no known causes or cures. Nearly 50% of patients with CHD must undergo invasive heart surgery to survive. In South Carolina all surgeries to correct congenital heart defects are undergone at the Medical University of South Carolina.
