Monterey Dam & Bridge Construction Project 2013

Week of February 4th, 2013:

Begin Construction on Monday 2/4/13.  Mobilize equipment, drive temporary sheet piling at inlet to existing box culvert / raceway to divert water over the existing dam.  Begin removal of existing box culvert and mill foundation.  Begin excavation work for temporary diversion channel.

 Week of February 11th, 2013:

Continue work to remove existing box culvert and mill foundation.  Continue excavation work for temporary diversion channel.  Place rip rap stone to protect the slopes of the temporary diversion channel.  Pull temporary sheeting and divert water to temporary diversion channel and back to the existing raceway.

 Week of February 18th, 2013:

Begin work to drive sheet piling to build cofferdam around the existing bridge and dam.  Begin demolition of the existing bridge and dam structures.  The cofferdam is to keep the water out of the area where the new dam and bridge abutments will be constructed.  Set a temporary bridge over the temporary diversion channel for construction access.

 Week of February 25th, 2013:

Finish up demolition work on the existing bridge and dam structures.  Begin to build and set formwork for the concrete floor to the new dam structure.

Week March 4th, 2013:

Finish excavation for the dam foundation.  Place and compact base material for the dam foundation.  Set formwork and reinforcing steel for the dam foundation.  Place concrete for the dam foundation.

 Week of March 11th, 2013:

Excavation work for the dam spillway.  Place heavy riprap for the dam spillway.  Excavation for the north and south abutments of the new bridge.

 Week of March 18th, 2013:

Drive permanent sheet piling along the east side of Mill Street.  Drive piling for the north and south bridge abutments.  Set formwork for the outside walls of the dam.  Set reinforcing steel for the outside walls of the dam.  Place concrete for the outside walls of the dam.

 Week of March 25th, 2013:

Set formwork for the north and south abutments for the new bridge.  Set reinforcing steel for the north and south abutments for the new bridge.  Place concrete for the north and south abutments of the new bridge.  Set formwork for the weir of the new dam.  Set reinforcing steel for the weir of the new dam.  Set formwork for the weir of the new dam.  Set reinforcing steel for the weir of the new dam.  Place concrete for the weir of the new dam.

 Week of April 1, 2013:

Set formwork for the north and south abutments for the new bridge.  Set reinforcing steel for the north and south abutments for the new bridge.  Place concrete for the north and south abutments of the new bridge.  Install dry hydrant standpipe along the south edge of the dam.

Week of April 8, 2013:

Backfill north and south abutments for the new bridge.  Place rip rap stone in front of the north and south abutments for the new bridge.  Set girders for the new bridge.

Week of April 15, 2013:

Begin work installing decking for the new bridge.  Begin work setting reinforcing steel for the bridge deck.

Week of April 22, 2013:

Continue work installing decking for the new bridge.  Continue work setting reinforcing steel for the bridge deck.

Week of April 29, 2013:

Place concrete for the bridge deck.

Week of May 6, 2013:

Place concrete for the sidewalk on the bridge deck.  Pull temporary sheet piling from the cofferdam around the new dam site.  Begin work to strip the formwork from the bridge deck.  Begin work to install the bridge railing on the east side of the bridge deck.  Install erosion control items for the switch to grading and backfilling operations.

Week of May 13, 2013:

Continue work to install the bridge railing on the west side of the bridge deck.  Continue work to strip formwork from the bridge deck.  Finish pulling temporary sheet piling from the cofferdam around the new dam site.  Drive temporary sheet piling to block water from the temporary diversion channel and begin directing water over the new dam.  Begin work backfilling the temporary diversion channel and building the embankments for the roadway.

Week of May 20, 2013:

Continue work to install the bridge railing on the west side of the bridge deck.  Begin work to strip formwork from the bridge deck.  Finish pulling temporary sheet piling from the cofferdam around the new dam site.  Begin to drive temporary sheet piling to block water from the temporary diversion channel and begin directing water over the new dam.

Week of May 27, 2013:

Continue work stripping decking from the bridge.  Continue work to install bridge railing.  Install railing around sluice gate platform.  Finish temporary sheet piling to close off flow to the diversion channel.  Excavate rip rap from the diversion channel.  Begin work to place fill in the diversion channel.  Begin grading operations to build subgrade for the roadway and embankments.

Week of June 3, 2013:

Continue work grading and placing backfill and stone for the subgrade to the roadway.  Begin to prepare grade for curb and gutter and sidewalk.

Week of June 10, 2013:

Continue grading operations; finish backfilling the temporary diversion channel, saw cutting and removing existing pavement, building subgrade and embankments for the roadway, preparing grade for curb and gutter and sidewalk, placing topsoil.  Pull temporary sheet piling from the temporary diversion channel.  Demobilize crane from the project site.

 Week of June 17, 2013:

Continue grading operations; build subgrade for the roadway and embankments, place stone for pavement base, prepare grade for curb and gutter and sidewalk, place topsoil.  Install storm sewer inlets, pipe and outfalls.

 Week of June 24, 2013:

Continue work grading and placing backfill and stone for the subgrade to the roadway.  Begin to prepare grade for curb and gutter and sidewalk.  Place concrete for curb and gutter and sidewalk.

Week of July 1, 2013:

Fine grade stone for roadway pavement structure.  Continue work on final landscaping and restoration.  Pave asphalt pavement for Mill Street.

Week of July 8, 2013:

Place stone for shoulders on Mill Street.  Install beam guard on east side of Mill Street.  Continue work on final landscaping and restoration.  Sweep roadway and clean up construction debris from the work site.  Work on any punch list items.  Opening ceremony scheduled for July 11, 2013.

Week of July 15, 2013:

Install sluice gate railing.  Finish dry hydrant installation.  Continue work on any punch list items.

Week of July 22, 2013.

Finish up any punch list items.


On Thursday, July 11, 2013 the Town of Oconomowoc along with special guests, neighbors and town staff held a ribbon cutting ceremony to honor the hard work by many to see the old mill dam removed and a new one constructed as well as replacing the bridge.  Here is a slideshow of photos from that day.
